In 2019 we cut the “Avalon Ave” EP at iconic FAME Studios; which was produced by Jimbo Hart, the bass player for Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit. Jimbo introduced me to so many great Muscle Shoals people including Charles Holloman, owner and operator of East Avalon Recorders. We wound up finishing “Avalon Ave" at East Avalon Recorders. Then, last summer, I found myself at East Avalon with my fiancé Dayna Bee for a fiddle session she had booked for a good friend and Nashville artist named Brandon Jesse. When we arrived Charles mentioned that he had been working a lot lately with David Hood (Aretha Franklin, The Staple Singers, Wilson Pickett, Paul Simon, Bob Seger) on bass and Clayton Ivey (Little Richard, The Jackson 5, Clarence Carter, BB King) on keys and that I should look into booking some time to cut some tracks. David and Clayton are two of the most legendary session players in The Shoals area and I was tickled to have the opportunity to work with them. Clayton told me that one of his favorite drummers is Ed Greene; a powerhouse session player from LA whose credits include: Marvin Gaye (“Let’s Get it On”), Steely Dan (“I’ve Got The News”), Hall & Oats (“Rich Girl”) and Glenn Campbell (“Rhinestone Cowboy”). Over the next few months I went down to East Avalon for several sessions and tracked 10 songs total. I then booked Marie Lewey and Cindy Walker aka “The Shoals Sisters” along with Angela Hacker to sing all the backing vocal parts that I wrote. They had such soulful instincts that lead to some great collaboration. Dayna Bee wrote 4 beautiful string arrangements for the record; which we have been tracking at our home studio in Nashville. The 10 song self-produced LP “Back to The Shoals” is the mixing process and will be released once a record label has jumped on board.
